tal of the State, they have just established and are now publishing a very respectable weekly newspaper called "The Republicans". This paper edited and published by colored men, Messrs John E. Williams and W. M. Pierson Jr., is gaining quite a full circulation among the people.] If well edited and properly managed its circulation will soon become very great. [In Raleigh, as in many other parts of the State, also, there are many literary and benevolent societies, some composed of men, others of women, which are exerting a beneficial influence. The "Relief Society" of which Mr. Robert Wyche of Raleigh is the President, which did so much for needy colored women during the war, and which is still caring for that class, deserves here special notice.] Nor would full justice be done the Freedwomen of this State, did I not, in mentioning the name of Mrs Wyche, say that she is distinguished and loved for a thousand good deeds put forth in behalf of many noble Federal soldiers in their escape from the Confederate military prison at Salisbury; and for as many more good deeds put forth on behalf of poor and suffering Freedwomen, in and about Raliegh.
