Discussing Lincoln's birthday and S.F. State College prof pointed out this irony to his class: If one of Honest Abe's proposals had been carried out, the blacks would be the richest people in the country and the whites eager for integration. Lincoln proposed that not only should the slaves be freed but a vast area in sparsely-settled southwest America - which would include today's Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico - be turned over to them. It never got off the ground because of the Civil War but if it had happened, the freed slaves would now be wallowing in oil riches.
