We have rented a small room in a motel on Fenwick Island. The children are with us so we are in band of four.
[00:20:33]
Sometimes the need for solitude is overwhelming, I take comfort in simply listening to the waves. This afternoon my wife and daughter arm and arm took a walk along the beach, my son and I followed behind tossing a football covered with sand.
[00:20:48]
We measured the distance of our walk by the buildings on our left. We made a turn in the sand and walked back to the Sea Charm Motel.
[00:20:58]
I undressed and decided to take a shower. The kids turned on the television. My wife decided to cook.
[00:21:05]
Inside the bathroom, there was only one clean towel. I thought for a moment how my life has changed, I adjusted the water from cold to warm to finally hot.
[00:21:17]
A small bar of soap found a home between my hands. I began to hum some song I heard on the radio on our way here.
[00:21:26]
My wife opened the door and told me, Miles David died. Died on my birthday, she said. The day was too beautiful [[pause]] to last.
[00:21:37]
Now there's a thing in terms of, uh, it's based on my life, and what you find I try to capture the African American family.
[00:21:45]
And it's a conscious attempt in terms of, uh, my wife and my daughter, you know -- mother, daughter and then my son.
[00:21:56]
It's this bonding type thing. Then in the middle is individual wrestling you know with the changes, you know, in terms of the texts of family and stuff.
[00:22:05]
And I think we have to think of what Miles, Miles represents -- uh see if it freaks -- See if I say Cecil Taylor died, I say Jimi Hendrix. Say the Beatles, you know I say something like, you know,
[00:22:16]
what happens is that that we have to look at at Miles and what that represents. And this individual who you know has one clean towel left in the bathroom, you know [[laughter]] and he's resting with this whole thing.
[00:22:28]
In fact, tell you the true story to this, [[laughter]] is, um, I'm out there on Fenwick Island and we had a choice between, like, this one room facing the water
[00:22:36]
or, you know, the larger room, facing the back. [[laughter]] And you figure if you go all these miles from D.C. to the beach, you want to see the water when you wake up.
[00:22:45]
So you select the small apartment, right, facing the water. I had never, ever been anywhere, just to spend time with my family.
