Referring to your letter of the 7th inst. relating to compensation of Hon. Hugh L. Bond for services rendered in the prosecution of claims of colored soldiers for Maryland State bounty, I am directed by Brev. Maj. Gen. O. O. Howard Commissioner to invite attention to the following copy of endorsement from this Bureau dated "February 8, 1868" or communication of "February 5, 1868" from the Asst Commr of Maryland.

"Respectfully return to Asst. Commr. of Maryland.  As it is not possible to anticipate the amount of work to be done by Judge Bond, the remuneration cannot be fixed beforehand.
