when remonstrated with, were told that their action would certainly lead to interference by the Military authorities, and in reply to this they said that they would serve Gen'l Pope and the Bureau Agent in the same way if they could get us. This seems more severe when we reflect, that, in every instance when white men have shot freedmen, they have escaped with impunity. The first instance, where a freedman has committed a crime is seized upon, to glut their vengeance upon their former slave. The authorities at Atlanta have received official notice of the matter and will doubtless arrest the mob, or those who took a prominent part in it, and then try them before a military commission. The Civil Courts will do nothing towards punishing white men for offences committed against colored people.

Since my last report, I have addressed the colored men several times upon the subject of schools, and I am pleased to be able to report that we have organized six colored schools in my jurisdiction.
