The charges that Mr. Hildreth prefers against Major Bolenius I can pay very little about. I did hear him make some such remark as, that he would have made money out of his official fruition had he had a chance, but I thought he meant it for an extravagant expression. He was sometimes a little rough in his manner with men who came into the office and irritated him, but no more so than most any German.

As to his ability, I think he is a man of shrewd perception and of good mind, and he possesses a good education [[crossed out]]and.[[/crossed out]] As far as my knowledge goes he is well educated for the position he holds.

Mr. Hildreth from what I know of him has an unfortunate depiction. I should not wish to pay that he was dishonored, but he has a propensity, of picking flaws in the management of other persons' affairs to the neglect of his own, to a discreditable degree.
