H.B. Claflin & Co. of New York have a claim of over $8.000. for goods sold said Waco Manufacturing Company, every dollar of which will be lost unless you release said claim or instruct Genl. Reynolds not to have any Government Employe bid up the property but permit it to be sold for a nominal amount.

You must I think be personally acquainted with Mr. H.B. Claflin & be aware that he gave liberally for the support of the War, & also gives largely for the support of colored schools & churches in the Southern Country. My business in this state is for the collection of his honest dues for goods sold, but run against a snag when I found that you had closed them up, hence my appeal to you, & to your generosity to put matters in such a shape as will enable them to ultimately get their pay which can only be done by complying with my request.

The sale is advertized to take place on the 17th inst. Be kind enough to inform me of your decision care of [[strikethrough]] J.E. Cowen Houston Texas [[/strikethrough]] Geo. Butler & Co. Galveston Texas. Telegraph me your decision at my expense

Respectfully Yours
