Lieut M. Barber 34th U.S. Infantry
A.A.A Gen.
Vicksburg Miss.

Lieut,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your Communication of the 25th inst containing the following Extract. (viz)

"Lieut Williams, your Inspector, drinks strong drinks and occasionally gets drunk. On an Inspection tour while at Jackson, in a state of intoxication he fired his pistol and the ball passed through a picture in a gentleman room."

I would respectfully state that I have been personally acquainted with Lieut Williams since last March, and  perhaps know as much as regards his social character as any Officer at the Post, and have yet to learn or have it intimated that Lieut Williams was dissipated. I was present at the time Lieut Williams fired his Pistol and the ball passed through the picture in a gentleman room. {Lieut Thomas L Nye Quarters}
