In reply to your communication of the 22nd inst asking what opportunities I have had for knowing Lieut D.M. White Sub-Asst Commr at Yazoo City and requesting me to report as to his character for sobriety general conduct & c I have the honor to state that I have known Lieut White nearly two years. from March 1866, to March 1867, I was on duty with him in the district of Meridian, and never to my knowledge during that time was he ever drunk. Strictly honest in all his dealings ever mindful of his duties he has by no act to
