charged with the stabbing, to appear at the Circuit Court, in bonds to the amount of $200.00. Mr. G. was fined $25.00 for assault, and the freedman $10.00 for beating his wife. Mr. Huggins has the case examined & induced the magistrate to increase the bail, in the stabbing case, to $500.00 for the purpose he states of showing the freedmen that the Bureau did not countenance lawlessness & crime, the man is now in jail, he not being able to give security for that amount. This appears to be very much like having a man punished before trial and conviction. He also endeavored to have the fine for wife beating increased to $25.00 for the same purpose.
