While at Mr Gilmor's place Mr. L. inquired if the negroes had registered. and finding they had not, he instructed them as to their rights. It appears however that instead of advising them in the hearing of their employer, he took them some distance and talked with each one separately, & the negroes themselves testify to the falsity of the statement, that he advised them of their rights in the presence of their employer.
Mr. Gilmor admits that he has fined each of the hands who went to Yazoo City on the 22nd of July at the rate of $5.00 per day for the time lost, not because they went to register, but for absenting themselves
