HEAD QUARTERS, ASSISTANT COMMISSIONER,
Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands,
DIST. OF MARYLAND AND DELAWARE,
No. 12 NORTH CALVERT STREET,
Baltimore, Md., March 6th 1868.

General:
In answer to your communication of the 2nd ultimo, I have the honor to state that I entered upon the duties of Asst. Commissioner for the State of Maryland on the first day of September 1866. I found at the office Bvt. Maj. F.C. von Schirach who was in charge of the Claim Division with all the papers connected with the Division, Discharges &c., which papers he kept in his desk.

He continued in charge to the 20" of June 1867, when he was relieved by an order from the Commissioner and ordered to his regiment.

The desk and papers were left in charge of the Clerk Mr. Charles W. Hildreth. Some time after (I should think months) Mr. Hildreth reported that one of the Discharges was missing. I directed him to search for it until he found it, if possible.
