an Act of Congress granting certain lots in possession of the Government for school purposes and a subscription of twelve hundred dollars ($1,200) obtained for the establishment of a school of a higher grade than is now in operation in the State.-

There are three (3) Hospitals in operation in the State for the treatment of persons who cannot otherwise be properly cared for, one at Lauderdale with capacity for three hundred beds,- one at Vicksburg with one hundred and fifty beds,- and one at Natchez with thirty beds, each well supplied with everything needed for the care and comfort of the sick.- There are also dispensaries at at Vicksburg, Jackson, and Grenada from which medicines are dispensed to persons attended at their homes. The medical force besides the Surgeon-in-Chief, Dr E.A. Duncan, consists of six surgeons, three at a salary of one hundred, and three at a salary of fifty
