As evidence of the confidence of the freedpeople in the Bureau, it has been noticed that where settlements have been broken up and established elsewhere, that the immediate vicinity of Bureau Agents has been selected so as to give them facilities for procuring aid and counsel and provide for the education of their children.
Towards the close of the last year much despondency prevailed throughout this community owing to a failure of some crops, and the very low price at which cotton was selling, and fears were entertained that this Spring the planting would be very much reduced, and in some places almost entirely abandoned, of late however these fears have been dispelled, prices have advanced to a satisfactory point, infusing energy and courage, and the result is the season opens with a determination to vigorously push the planting, of both cotton and cereals, the former in large quantity but not to the prejudice of the latter.
