B.R.F.& A. Lands Hd. Qrs. Sub Div of Warren Henderson N.C. Jany 24, 1868 Lieut. Col. Jacob F. Chur A.A.A. Genl Raleigh N.C. Colonel I have the honor to submit the following report in relation to the letter of Wm. A Eaton to Major Genl. O.O. Howard of the 14th inst referred to me for investigation by order of the Asst Com' of No. Ca. of 21st inst. I visited the plantation of Mr. Eaton & Mr Johnson on the 26" inst & met & conversed with Mr. Eaton and nearly all the hands on the two plantations. Mr. Eaton is Administrator & Agent of the Johnson Estate & manages it with his own. The hands are twenty five in number, 20 of them having wives & children representing an aggregate of 75 persons. The statements in Mr. Eatons letter in regard to the failure of the Crop of 1867 are entirely correct all the hands with a single exception are in debt (after crediting them with their share of the crop) from $10 to $80. for provisions alone, how much in addition they owe at the stores I do not know.
