Philip,

That's a lovely thought about the cover. I'll be represented by a gallery soon - possibly it could be persuaded to leave a color separation prepared. (How do you usually handle this?) (Should I make a deal with you?)

The portrait is an amusing object in touch with the writing and it was the best quality print available to you and Gretchen deserved to be celebrated for the effort. Also, its the only photograph which looks like me since Ivan Karp took another "random" shot in 1957 when I was a boy wandering about the Hausa. I saw the chronological sequence keeping the plates near their mentions in the text.

I presume to say, "Please don't overload the text with the plates."

I can't handle reviewing. I see no value in it. Barbara should know that by now. Max and I are not in the same century. He once named my work, Judd's and the Morris grey part as "sterile". Don and I were about to de-pants him at a loft party when he departed. We desired to see whether or no he had anything to recommend his opinion. (Judd was supposed to write a "sterile" note to him about the fact that I have a son. What happened to it is unknown.)

In the same mail with your letter, Jasper Johns sent a white paper cut out of his right foot print. Its lying here folded - toes upward and heel down. (Sonja is supposed to make a pair of wool slippers in a Yugoslavian mode from that folded footprint.)

Dan F.
