48 semester hours or a maximum of 64 semester hours of graduate course work, with the precise requirement determined when the individual is accepted as a candidate. In general, the shorter program applies to the student with the B.F.A. degree and the longer to the person with less extensive undergraduate preparation in Art.

...Beyond these requirements, the candidate presents a one-man exhibition and a written thesis. Displayed at the School or in a professional gallery, the one-man show is a significant step in the student's emergence as a professional artist. The thesis permits research disciplines of value to the future college teacher. Finally, oral examinations on the thesis and the one-man exhibition encourages the candidate, at the conclusion of his program, to examine the threads of his experience with a view to discovering integrating concepts that will guide his continuing artistic development.

A.
Concentration is offered in Painting, Print-making, Sculpture, and Crafts. At the graduate level, independent study is emphasized, although the student is expected to work with different teachers and to explore a range of technical possibilities. The program varies according to the nature of the department. In painting, much of the work may be done outside of class, but each student presents canvases for criticism in weekly seminars. Sculpture and Print-making majors work in the studio, using specialized equipment under more direct supervision of the instructor. Craft majors take courses in three cooperative studios-ceramics, weaving, and jewelry or metalsmithing- and later specialize in a particular medium.
