662 Karamoja girl

July 24 Nairobi, Kenya

Dear Lucy and Charles... I will return forever changed. We are so ignorant of Africa. Kenya is full of contradictions. The British are horrible to the Africans but are tolerated. We are in a colonialist hotel where 2 British women sat down next to us - when they saw we were black they got up saying "Oh" with absolute scorn. Constant tribal conflicts which split nation. Saw Masai with spears and shields hunting lions. Have gone out in country alone in a car which is not too cool seeing as there are lions but they, I suppose, are not hungry. Am picking up Swahili. In two days I have had to absorb a life time of information. Was re routed through London, Rome and UGANDA - no trouble except Lake Victoria next to the airport filled with man eating crocodiles that eyed the plane hungrily as it went up. So much to tell you. Nairobi's food and water are very good... but Lagos has open sewers.. will arrive in Lagos Saturday Women of some tribes have what appears to be a lot of freedoms- VERY outspoken. More later. Jambo! Jambo means Hello/Goodbye.
Love Howardena

Will meet Dr. Leaky of Olduvai Gorge fame tomorrow!
