Dear Emmy Lou:

I was very glad to receive the photographs and I like your solution. You certainly found a very good scheme to take care of that tremendous space. And I admire your artistry and energy!

Then your letter arrived about the separation - and it sounds like you have solved all this in a rational and civilized way.

About the talk you had with Jenkins - and my coming over this summer - that, unfortunately, is not possible as I will be working here until we leave the end of June for the Soviet Union.

I wish we had talked while you were here a little bit more about our work relation. I feel that you and I could work well together. Of course it might have been better if there were three of us with Bryon participating for three artists working together might take it out of a more personal relation that would exist between two. But I do think we both have the democratic philosophy. Perhaps it would be good, at this stage, to exchange opinions on our work relation. Perhaps you could jot a few ideas down - mail them to me - and I could add some of mine to this. But then, of course, I also know that much is solved during actual work.

As to fees - In three instances where I have worked with unions here - Amalgamated Lithographers, Fur Workers, and Local 1199 of the Hospital Workers - I have received perhaps 10% less than I would charge elsewhere and I think when unions paying professional fees to architects and builders they certainly should have the same attitude towards the artists.

Frankly, I feel a little lost at this stage as to how to proceed so I suggest you put a few ideas down and we can have a little more discussion.

Yours,
Ref
