behind the counter is the sort who tends her lady friends first. She always keeps the farmers til last (her husband is a school teacher). On this occasion she was serving a housewife who asked for coffee. On being informed there was none the housewife set up a loud complaint that she'd been asked to sacrifice a great many things so far but one thing she refused to do without was her coffee. A tall, thin farmer came forward and in a low tone said that when one recalled how at this very moment our boys are sacrificing their very lives he reckoned we could find something else to drink. 

Later the woman behind the counter offered to serve us, but we refused to go ahead of the farmer. When she turned to him he smiled and said well he'd really come to buy coffee but guessed he'd drink tea just as well. 

Jean and I felt nice the rest of the day. 

I did a poster while I was here, which I submitted to the competition in New York. It shows an expression of solidarity between the farmer, the industrial worker and the departing soldier under the slogan "Victory Starts Here." Though I like my theme I wasn't very happy about the technique I employed. I dislike slick finish and somehow I fell into it. Frankly I did not think I could do anything so smooth. Nevertheless that I did the poster at all pleases me because my circumstances and tools were makeshift and limited. 

Whatever work I do now must necessarily be confined to notes and sketches. But I think that I will come out enriched and full. I'm alone here all
