Dear Keith and Edna:

I must begin by thanking you for your lovely letter of June 8th. The best news in it is that Edna is back at the easel and so absorbed. I can see her sitting there quiet and debating with herself. Her knowledge is wide and her taste is superb. "We moderns" can't be naive. The whole history of art has been revealed and explored. From the caves "Alta Mira", down to 57th St. N.Y., U.S.A. - everything is known. The only thing that matters now is honesty of expression - never mind technique. Technique alone is spiritually fruitless. Technique may be national even racial but expression at its highest is universal and when it reaches the indescribable degree of excellence it is eternal. The whole modern upheaval centers around (mostly) design.

I wish Florida were where New Jersey is. Then we could meet and talk with ease what is so difficult and long to write.
