ROANOKE, VA.
Harry C. Nichols Chapter

It is with regret that I report the passing, on April 16, 1971, of our Chapter Vice President, Bro. Andrew J. Bennett. Born in 1889 at Elliston, Virginia, where he also learned telegraphy, he began as telegrapher in 1907 with the N&W Ry, working at various points, including Roanoke Yard where his familiar sine "Z" was heard by many old-timers. In 1944 he was appointed agent at Salem, Va. where he remained until his retirement in 1956. He was a very active member of the Presbyterian church, and will be missed by many. Survivors are Lucille, his widow, a son, two sisters, a brother, and seven grandchildren.
T. F. Humphries, President

THE LATE ALBERT S. ARNOLD

It has become necessary to report with deep regret and sorrow, the passing on of A. S. (Dad) Arnold who resided at Greensboro, N.C.

We older members of M.T.C. will miss him because many of us had the privilege of meeting him and his late wife Clara when he was active as M.T.C.'s Vice President for the Southeast Area in 1956-1964, during which period he labored to form Local Chapters of our Club at Greensboro and Lynchburg, N.C., Clifton Forge, Roanoke, and Bristol, Va., and at Bluefield, West Virginia.

"Dad", as he was known to his many friends, had a colorful career after he became a telegrapher in West Virginia at age 19. His late wife Clara who preceded him in death about two years ago, also was a telegrapher, and had served as our Club's Grand Chaplain. He was also a retired general secretary of Cone Memorial YMCA, active in Boy Scout work, member of the Rotary Club, of Eastern Star and a Mason.
Harry C. Clark, Vice Pres., Southeast Area, Roanoke, Va.

HELP! โ€” ANYONE?

Who knows where and how to obtain a book, a small hard-back volume of miscellaneous observations, reminiscences, entitled TALES OF THE TELEGRAPH. That is asked by Maple Leaf Chapter member Noble E. Haughton of 281 Sheppard Ave. East, Willowdale, Ontario, Canada, who would greatly appreciate receiving answers.

MEMBERS' IDENTIFICATION BADGE
[[Image]]

Inquiries by members about badges to be worn at Chapter meetings, etc., to aid in identifying them to others, resulted in our locating a firm which makes such badges as the one shown above. The firm is the J. Gould Company of 1563 West 203rd St., Torrance, Calif. 90501.

The badge is made of sturdy plastic, in either the pin on, or clip on style, with name of our Club, name or location of Chapter with which affiliated, and your name. Anyone desiring an appended bar showing title, or other desired designation, may have it for 50ยข additional to the $2.00 cost, i.e., a total of $2.50.

In ordering the badge, all wording should be typed or printed (to avoid error).

Face colors available are: Woodgrain light walnut, black, white, blue or red.

Specify whether pin on or clip on style is wanted, also color desired. Send check, money order, or cash. Money back if not satisfied. (This is informatign. Not an advertisement โ€” Edr.)

REGRETTABLE ERROS IN THE OBITUARY COLUMNS

The report of names, etc. for the obituary column of the Jan-Feb-March edition of D&D, received from the then Circulation Mgr (in charge of changes in mailing list of D&D) contained the name of Francis M. Tuttle of Phoenix, Arizona, and the report for use in the April-May-June edition contained the name of W. Bruce Bailey. Accordingly, those names were included in the Obits.

However, shortly after he had received his copy of the latter edition. W. Bruce Bailey, President of the Phoenix Chapter, surprised your editor with a phone call from Phoenix to announce that both he and Francis M. Tuttle are very much alive!

An investigation to ascertain why these two names were included in the list for D&D Obituary Columns, proved to be fruitless, except that it had occurred due to a misunderstanding.

The least that can now be said and done is, by publishing this item, to extend sincere apologies to Brothers Tuttle and Bailey and to the readers of D&D.

Another unaccountable and regrettable error was including in the "30 โ€” KEY CLOSED" column of Edition No. 2, VOL. VIII of the name of M. Syble Lenehan who had merely asked that her address be changed from Springdale, Ark., to Garland, Texas.

Sincere apologies are also extended by this item.
