under the name and style of Jacobs, Williams, Wood & Co. for the purpose of purchasing land for freedmen ostensibly to secure to their homes. I enclose a copy of the constitution marked "A." which appears by the records to have been adopted by the subscribers or share holders for the government of the association.
Jacobs, Williams, and Wood with four other colored men compose the Board of directors Mr Geo Hitchen, a white man is the Secretary and Treasurer and seems to be the chief advisor and manager, a Mr. G.D. Allen, a white man, by verbal authority (as he states, the records of the association furnishing no information on this point, receives the subscription either in cash or bounties, and transfers them to Mr. Hitchen who is directed to deposit the cash to the credit of Jacobs, Williams, Wood & Co. with a banking house in Natchez.
