Gentlemen

In reply to your inquiries I have the honor to make the following statement relatives to the sale of the bodies of Refugees and Freedmen who had died at the U.S. Hospital for Refugees and Freedmen in this city.

I remember to have had several conversations at the Hospital with Mr. Michael Cahill (who was then Druggist and Clerk there and who is now Acting Hospital Steward) at that Hospital respecting the sale of the bodies of deceased Refugees and Freedmen.  Mr. Cahill told me that they were being sold to Medical Schools in this city.  I also heard from other sources that they had gone as far off as Ann Arbor College Michigan.  I learned these facts not only from Mr. Cahill but also from students attached to the Hospital and other parties.

I remember having a conversation on this subject with Mr. Martin W. Roberts, then an acting medical cadet, in the Hospital.  Mr. Roberts told me that not only were the bodies traded away but that artificial means were used for the purpose of obtaining bodies by inducing death, such bodies being invariably sold.
