[[stamp]] THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF THE UNITED STATES [[/stamp]] My Dear Captain I received this paper from our friend Bruce I certainly think that a great mistake has been made somewhere, as he is truly loyal and a perfect gentleman. I think its our duty to do all we can for him and his interesting family As General Ely is a humane Gentleman would it not be wise for you to see him and intercede for poor Bruce. Times are exceedingly dull now you know and if he loose his position there, it will be hard for us to obtain another for him. Very truly &c (signed) George W Griffiths May 18-67 Louisville Ky May 18th 1867 Respectfully referred to General Ely, in confidence, for his information, perusal and return; and for such action as his warm heartedness in conjunction with his duty will allow (signed) E.D. Kennedy No. 1. Exhibit "A" Vol 1. pg. 36 Case of James Bruce
