with one Capt Kennedy, relative to the discharge of Bruce?

A
He came here to see me and we talked the matter over. I told him Genl Ely had ordered the discharge.

Q
Did Kennedy ever tell you that you had better be careful, that your commission in the Army, the bread of your family and your honor as a gentleman depended upon the matter of Bruce's discharge?

A
He informed me that he was an intimate friend of Genl Whipple's. That he had got many a case through by going in at the back door to see Genl W. and after asking me if I Knew Genl Thomas he intimated that I had better be careful, that people wondered how he accomplished so much - From his conversation I thought he meant to intimate that he would use his influence against me. I thought he meant to intimidate me, to make me retain Bruce.

Q
Did you offer him money or any other consideration to quash the proceedings that Bruce threatened to institute against you?

A
Never did. (Vol 2 Pg 5. L 1 to 28)
