Evidence in the case of James Bruce vs. Dr R.A. Bell A.A. Surgeon. U.S.A. and Bvt. Maj R.W. Roberts  U.S.V.
James Bruce being duly sworn deposed as follows:
Q. by Genl Runkle State your name, age and occupation?
Ans. Bruce My name is James Bruce. Agent 29. late clerk in Bureau.
Q—R. How long have you been in this Country? [[margin]]5 [[/margin]] Especially in Louisville?
A —B. Have been in the Country nearly four years. Consider myself a citizen, been in  Louisville 1 year.
Q — R How long have you known Maj. Roberts?
A. B — Since Oct 66. I think first me him at [[margin]]10[[/margin]] Wms Wallaces, where he was in the habit of going
Q — R. At what date was you first appointed a clerk in the Bureau?
A. — B 15th Jan'y 1867. regularly appointed 1st April 67
Q — R. State fully under what circumstances you [[margin]]15 [[/margin]] were appointed?
A. B — Maj Roberts after I became acquainted with him recommended and used his influence to procure me a place in the Bureau. I thought at the time it was out of pure friendship [[margin]]20 [[/margin]] for me and sympathy. But have since changed my mind as to his motive. He was at the same time acquainted with my wife. 
Q. R. In what office were you employed and what [[margin]]24 [[/margin]] the nature of your duties?
