A. B. About May 1st Maj Roberts told me in answer to my inquiry who was to be discharged, that a clerk was to be discharged on account of some errors in Mrs Roberts' 5 papers, but did not think it was me. Capt Brown told me at the same time that Maj Roberts said it was me. I was satisfied at the time that it was me.
Q. R. At what time did Maj Roberts deny having 10 tried to have you discharged?
A. B. Between the 10th & 15th of May we had a conversation, I told him I had a friend to go and see about the matter at Hd. Qrs. He asked me who. I said nothing, he then 15 said G-d-d-n-you - do you suspect I am trying to get you relieved. I said when I have proof I will accuse you only then - G-d. d-n it if I liked I could turn you out in two minutes, at 20 the same time I told him - showing my appointment - I had the same from Washington. (no one was present). I related the conversation to Capt Brown immediately. He said at the same time Genl Burbank 25 has orders to discharge clerks without submitting the discharge to Washington.
Q. R. Under what circumstances and where did 28 Maj Roberts pronounce Gen'l Ely a liar?
