I asked and obtained a private interview with Dr Bell, said I wanted to talk over this whole subject. That as a Union Man and late Supdt of the Bureau (now settled as a lawyer) had every wish for, the reputation and prosperity of his institution, and the honor of the Union Cause. He admitted that Dr Benson had been giving lectures in the Hospital and that some other men who had lately been in the rebel Army were cadets in the Hospital, receiving medical Education and quarters and rations (verbatim) but said that these things were by no option of his, but by orders from Hd Qrs. He mentioned Dr Town as being the man who was to blame for it. I told him I knew Dr Town well- (He had forgotten his name [[margin]] note [[/margin]] I said if Dr Town had recommended all such facts (verbatim) I know he was imposed upon and grossly misinformed. That I could hardly conceive of such things being in existence, that enemies of the Government, could receive a living and profession [[margin]] education [[/margin]] from the Govt. I had a very long talk with Dr Bell and advised him as a friend to wash his hands of this. I told him frankly I thought he had made
