Testimony of Lieut A. Benson Brown in the case of James Bruce vs. Maj. R.M. Roberts and Dr R.A. Bell-
Being duly sworn deposes as follows-
Q. 5 What is your name. Age. and occupation?
A- A. Benson Brown. 1st Lieut 43 U.S.A. Age 27 yrs.
Q Are you acquainted with James Bruce?
A. I am and have been since 15,, Jan'y 1867.  
Q- Please state all you know about the discharge 10 of James Bruce from the position of Clerk in Bureau R.F. and A. Lands?
A. The first I know of his going to be discharged (verbatim) Maj Roberts came to me about the 1st of May. and told me that Lieut Burnett said 15 that Bruce would have to be discharged, that they had noticed some of Bruce's writing, and considered him incompetent, that Lt Burnett had said "if he would recommend his discharge it would be all that was necessary. 20 If he did not they would issue a written order directing it.  I asked him when it was to be done, He said Gen'l Ely had ordered him to recommend his discharge and at the same time recommend another in 25 his place. He was not discharged until 26 May 30 1867, or about that time, in the -
