A| Maj. Roberts recommended him to me.  Therefore I recommended him to Gen'l Ely, who appointed him.  Capt. Brown being absent.  I took the trouble to inform 5| Bruce as to his duties. and by the Captains return.  Bruce was pretty well posted in regard to them, and so long as I was in the office, he performed them to his satisfaction, and was never complained of by 10| Capt. Brown under whose control he was.
