Bureau in this state, the Gen'l told me at that time, that he did not wish to interfere in the case, if his writing was satisfactory to Lieut Frederick in whose [[note]] 5 [[/note]] office he was employed. Soon after that several other papers came to the A.C.O. in the same handwriting. And I again called the attention of Gen'l Ely to them, and suggested to him that Bt Maj [[note]] 10 [[/note]] R.W. Roberts who was at that time Sub A.C vice C.H. Frederick relieved be directed to employ another clerk and have Mr Bruce discharged on account of incompetency. I know nothing of the [[note]] 15 [[/note]] personal character of Mr Bruce, do not know him personally. And I urged his discharge on the ground that he did not write a suitable hand for the business of the Bureau, and that a suitable man could be obtained [[note]] 20 [[/note]] for the same price. Gen'l Ely instructed me to say to Maj Roberts that he had better as soon as he could obtain a competent clerk to fill his place recommend the discharge of Bruce and the appointment [[note]] 25 [[/note]] of a successor. I gave this message to Maj R in person at the Asst Comr's Office the first opportunity I had.
