Q. What is your name age & position & how long have you occupied such
position?
A John Ely, 51, Col & Bt Brig Genl US Vols
Chief Supt and D.C. Bureau R. F. and A. Lands state of Ky, have occupied the first position since March 17, 1866, & the second since July 12, 1866. Q Under what circumstances was James Bruce employed as clerk in the Bureau? 
A. Lt. C. H. Fredrick 45th U.S.I. Sub. Asst. Comr.  
Louisville Sub Dist. made written application to Employ an additonal Clerk Jany 30th 1867, having on various previous occasions made verbal applications for similar authority. The name of the family he desired to Employ was never mentioned to me, His communication was returned Feby 4,67 by Endorsement giving him authority to Employ an additional clerk.
Q What are the rules in the Bureau as to the antecedents and qualification of men Employed as clerks? 
A. The rules of the Bureau are, that he shall be a citizen of the U.S. that his clerical qualifications shall be sufficient
