| June 25th 1867  #176 | Maryland W W Wiegel AAG June 25th Transmitted |  Baltimore Md June 25th 1867  Forwards to Maj J H Remmington letter of James Tynes stating that Mrs Smith wife of David Smith has lost the receipt for his discharge and requests that a copy of the discharge be forwarded either to her or to Lieut Murphy at Norfolk Va.  |

| June 27th 1867 #177 | Mississippi  A C Gillem Genl  |  Vicksburg  June 20th 1867  Forwards letter of Robert Leachman U S Dist Atty stating that indigent Freedmen and Refugees often meet legal advice, to [[?]] the full enjoyment of personal liberty &c.  From their inability to employ Counsel have been deprived , in many cases, of these rights before the different state Tribunals that the Courts often bind them over when they ought not to be, and [[?]] to bind over those whom inquire them.  [[?]] much time to their mother, but is unable to  continue without some compensation, and offers his services as legal advisor for $75.00 per month for the balance of the year.  Favorably endorsed by Capt J  N Sunderland SAC and Disapproved by the Asst Comr of Miss., believe the policy of the Bureau to be that of furnishing aid [[?]] where demanded by the condition of the freedman   To employ an attorney at a fixed salary would be lay the foundation of many useless suits .  Prefers to exercising the discretion of employing legal assistance where deemed necessary for the protection of the freedmen.  EB p 316 Vol 3 |
