States that he is not aware of any orders authorizing this action, and requests if there by any such order that he be furnished immediately with a copy, and if there bge none, that arrangements be at once made by which the Bureau can furnish the labor, materials, &c. States that Andrew Wheeler (Colored) received in answer to his application made some time since for the recovery of his son Thomas Wheeler, the enclosed letter signed by Bvt. Lieut Col. A.W. Shaffer, Sub Asst Commr at Charlotte N.C., and in answer thereto submits the enclosed affidavits of himself wife and Mrs. M.L. Sled, as proof of the falsity of Mr. Griswold's statement contained in Col. Shaffer's letter, that "the boy had neither father nor mother living." As the boy was bound to Dr. E.O. Elliott upon Griswold's statement & it is proved to be false, said Wheeler requests the annulment of this indenture the restoration of his child, and transportation for said child to Baltimore, Md. Sept 2d. Referred to Asst. Comr. of N.C. for investigation & report. Sept 12th. Rec'd back with report. G.B.p..,423 Vol 3 |
