THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN MUSEUM OF ART
ALUMNI MEMORIAL HALL ANN ARBOR

August 3, 1965

Mr. Germain Seligman
5 East 57th Street
New York 22, New York

Dear Mr. Seligman:

As you know, I am now in Ann Arbor, which has a wonderful library as well as a delightful atmosphere.
My first job as Associate Director of the Museum is to prepare an exhibition of French water colors, roughly from 1760 - 1860. The exhibition, which will have an illustrated catalogue, will take place from September 30 - October 24. It will include only fifty or sixty water colors, both by well known artists like Gericault or Delacroix, but also water colors by the lesser known people. In fact it is really the main aim of the exhibition - to show that there were among minor artists excellent and talented craftsmen.
I wonder whether you have in your collection such water colors, which you would be willing to lend us? This is quite a broad request, and I realize it. However, I am trying to make an exhibition an interesting and useful one, and any suggestions that you may have will be welcome. I may add that the emphasis will be on the period 1800 - 1860.

With cordial regards,
Paul Grigaut
