Mr. Germain Seligmann,
c/o Jacques Seligmann & Co.,
3 East 51st St.,
New York City

Dear Mr. Seligmann:
Your letter of January 13th addressed to our Mr. Lisle has been turned over to me to answer, as his letter to you stated would be the case.

It would be very pleasant were we able to buy Stuart portraits when offered for sale, but unfortunately that seems to be highly impossible. We are short of money and running behind as it is and would have to count on the cooperation of some member interested in the family represented by the portrait. Can you let us know who is represented in these two pictures to which you refer and the price asked for them. As I myself have been trying in vain to sell a Stuart portrait for many years I have a very definite idea of the market value of Stuart's work in times like the present.

Yours very truly,
W. Sumner Appleton
