Dear Germain:

As you know, we had to return the Tiepolo Sacrifice, much to my regret. As I had forewarned you, there was considerable opposition to the drawing's acquisition, on the part of a certain person. I think I could have, perhaps, swing the Purchasing Committee into line, but I noticed the members had become so uncertain and confused, I thought it might create a bad situation, so I relinquished the fight reluctantly. This I can tell you, however, someday, someone is going to feel very sorry that the opportunity was missed.

With kindest regards, and many thanks for letting me have the drawing all summer,

Always sincerely,
