Dear Mr. Francis:
Your very nice lines of May 17th., have just arrived and I hasten to answer you.
I have no recollection of having said that "Mlle. Romaine Lacaux" was a relative of the Barret-Decap family, as I do not think that I was ever told this. What I definitely stated is that it had been bought directly from the Barret-Decap. I might have been told that they had acquired it from the sitter's family - but even this I am not certain of. I therefore believe it wiser to leave this reference out, as under the present circumstances we surely couldn't prove it.
I am sorry to have given you that impression in some misconstructed sentence perhaps, and do hope that it doesn't inconvenience you.
Mr. Milliken told me the other day, when it was my privilege to see him on his short visit to New York, that he would send me some material for the New York papers, and do tell him anew, that if he wishes, I will be only too pleased to try my hand at giving your important purchases all possible publicity, though
