CABLE ADDRESS: MUSART CLEVELAND

Mr. Germain Seligmann
Jacques Seligmann and Co., Inc.
5 East 57th Street
New York, New York

My dear Mr. Seligmann:

Your letter of September 26th was on my desk when I returned on Monday, and I have been attending to a number of things which have accumulated before answering you.

I appreciate very much the spirit of your letter, and will be extremely glad to have a chance to talk to you in person about the matter and the questions which it raises. Not having seen Mr. Waegen himself, and having the matter only reported to us through Mr. Hanna, I knew nothing about the fact that $60,000.00 was the price at which you were holding the picture, and that $48,000.00 was your offer to the Museum. I still am greatly puzzled as to what the outcome can possibly be, but if we should talk the matter over perhaps there might be some kind of a compromise which would make it possible for the picture to come here.

In any case, it would be a pleasure to see you in Cleveland, to talk with you and to show you the Museum as it is now.

Thank you again for your courtesy and the consideration which your letter so eloquently shows.

Very sincerely yours,

William M Milliken
