Dear Henry:

It is only about five days ago that I returned from Europe and found your letter of September 14, inquiring about valuations for Mr. L.B. Williams' planned gift to your museum.

Do therefore excuse this belated answer, and be ready also to show your indulgence, for the indications you give me are rather vague with the exception of course of the Degas drawing.

Here however are some valuations which I hoe will be of help.

Delacroix - I have a very lovely watercolor of two arabs seated on the ground with horses, measuring 6-1/2" x 10-1/4", for which I am asking $1,200.-

It would seem from your description that, provided the watercolor is fresh in colors, a similar price could be applied.

Degas - "Mlle. Dubourg" - I would value around $1,500 to $1,800.-

Jongkind - according to the freshness a figure of around $200.- or $300.- would seem adequate.

Matisse - This is a little more difficult I feel to price, but it would seem that from $800.- - $1,000.- would be fair offhand.

Do not hesitate to call further upon me in this connection should there be anything else on your mind.

As you can imagine my first thought upon returning was to look into the matter of the Redo exhibition. The pastels and drawings are all framed and matted by now and my only wish is that you and Mr. Milliken will be as pleased with them as I am.

Of course you did not see them in their original condition and you will not be able to realize the transformation this exterior rejuvenation done towards their looks. I have however left two or three of them in the original frames as their quaintness adds a certain character.

The drawings, with the exception of a couple have all received the same mat, which will give, and do hope you will feel the same, way, an appearance of uniformity to the group. i was afraid that by choosing mats of different colors it might create a distracting confusion.

The catalogue, as you know, is progressing I find most
