"Snake Thread" Flask - Page Two

glass were applied to its sides. A simple fillet of glass thread also encircles the neck.

The transparent glass has a greenish cast and is believed to have been manufactured in the Rhineland between 300 and 400 A.D. Sides of the bottle are slightly depressed by the serpentine decoration at points of contact, making the fabrication technique clearly visible.

The bottle was first part of the Dukes d'Arenberg collection and had been obtained by Jacques Seligmann & Co., Inc., New York, before being acquired by The Corning Museum of Glass. The finest group of "snake thread" glass is in the Cologne collection which has been housed since the war in Dusseldorf, Germany.
