then the people some of them, tell them that there is some [[?]] about it, that the Northerners don't care any thing about them, they are after their money & lots, &c &c
There is a small house that can be bought for $400.00. House of 1/2 acre of ground. The house is 18 by 30 one story high. Chimney in the middle will hold perhaps 50 scholars. I tell them that the "Bureau" will not consult to purchase as small a house. It will not hold half them scholars which would attend the school. I am having a serious time but will do the very best I can. I have had several letters from these upper counties, about colored schools. They have heard by the way of the colored people that I was trying to put up one in Greensville. "Gen'l Lewis" told me when here that he thought he could appoint me as "agent " for these upper counties. I wish would would speak to him about it. If he can do so I will be very much obliged as I am spending considerable time. I am not a rich man. Let me hear from you. Can you suggest any plan for me to bring the colored folk up to duty.
Very Respectfully
Joel Tirrell
