To enable me to maintain my ground here, I have written to a Penna. friend, supposed to have great influence with the President, to make application for my appointment as assessor of In. Rev. for 6th District, Tenn.  I have also written to Governor Brownlow asking his cooperation and assistance.  I have given him some references which may at least help to turn his mind in my favor.  Still as I am not much known in Nashville, outside of your office a word from you, as to my character and influence among the Freedmen, might be of great use.  Knowing the kindness of your heart, I have felt no hesitation in stating my case.
