by the Prest. for the position, was rejected by the Senate & his case is supposed to be definitely settled.  

I think it would do some of our proud Secessionists, and not less pliant Conservatives good, to see a man appointed to this office, upon whom they have looked with so much contempt, on account of his labor for, and interest in the lowly & ignorant.

We have had two meetings, for instructing the Freedmen, as to their rights and duties, under the recent franchise law.  They were well attended, and very enthusiastic.  The colored people here seem determined almost to a man to vote the Radical ticket.  We have no other news, and at present are all well.
