Spring Hill May 1st 1867
Rev D. Burt

Dear Rev.
We have been compelled to seek protection from U.S. troops. A gang of fellows have disturbed us and endangered our lives. So long as we were suffering insult by word and look we though we would bear it but it seemed too much to have rocks flying through our windows among our children. On Sunday night the 21st of Apr. while I was at church my house was attached and one large rock came into the house with great force. My family was very much frightened - there was no man about the house. Mr. Miller (Union) has, repeatedly been treated the same way, they have treated him worse - attacking him with deadly weapons & threatening his life.

We hope for quiet now - at least while the troops are here. Money for work on S. House not received yet.

Yours Truly

Henry C. Eddy
