Shelbyville Tenn. Sept. 12th 1867
Rev D. Burt
Nashville Tenn.

I was more than pleased to hear of your safe return to your field of labor, In answer to your question as to whether I was going to teach school this year I would reply that I am engaged now in teaching under the auspices of the Colord School Board of this place, they had a small amount of the Public's money on hand, and in order to expend it for what they collected if they employed me at a small salary with the view of having me teach until the funds gave out, there is not more than enough to run the school 2 months. Soon after I closed my school in July Mr. Dunlap opened a free also and has been teaching ever since. He has been the means of doing a great deal of harm in this community, he has completely broken up the Methodist Church and by his [[?]] driven their preacher away and set the members at variance. Since I commenced teaching last fall he has tried to do me all the harm he could by publicly and private denouncing me.
