O. O. Howard, forbade the exacting of fees from the freedman but declared in lieu thereof agents should be paid by the government. Maj Pierce appreciating my fathers services, retained him in office and promised him the usual salary, of $100.00 per month if he would only continue. The business done by my father was more than that done at Demopolis the home of Maj Pierce. In September following Maj Pierce having a pet from his own state (Michigan) that he wished an office for, he had my father turned out, for no cause whatever, and installed one Mr. Farrand in his place. My father did not refuse to give up the office, but told Maj Pierce he wanted his money for the six months he had served, when lo! Maj Pierce tells him if he will take the iron clad oath he will see him paid. This my father could not do, thus giving Maj P. an excuse for not paying him. Previous to this when he retained my father in office not one word was said about taking the iron clad oath
