State of Alabama. }
County of Hale. } Personally appeared before me W. T. Blackford, Judge of Probate, in and for said County and State, P. T. Wright, who being first duly sworn says that in the year 1866, by virtue of his office as Justice of the Peace, accepted the Agency of the "Freedmen's Bureau" with certain powers from Brig. Genl. Wager Swayne, then in command of the said District of Alabama. The business of the office at this point, (Greensboro, Alabama) increased to such an extreme, that on the 21st day of January, A.D. 1867 Brevet Major C.W. Pierce, then in command of the District of Demopolis, appointed him Special Agent, with full powers, subject to all pains and penalties as other officers of like grade in the Military Department of the United States, of said Bureau, for East Greene, now Hale County, Ala., which office he was recognized and filled until the 17th day of October, 1867, when he was discharged by said Bv't Maj. C.W. Pierce, because he could not take the Iron clad Oath, and his place filled by one G.A. Farrand. He further says that he was told by said Bvt. Maj. C.W. Pierce that the fees of office would be dispensed with about the middle of April previous to October 1867, and that time he would be paid a salary by the Government, and that he has never received fees from any quarter whatever since that date, and that his successors informed him that they received one hundred dollars per month and office rent, which salary he now claims as justly due him.
