I am in receipt of your note of the 10th Inst enclosing vouchers for my signature, I must confess that I was somewhat surprised, as my claim had been passed upon and approved and ordered to be paid, and why is it that it has been passed upon the second time and left at your discretion whether I should get anything for my hard earned servises or not,

You say that Maj Pierce says that he made application for my appointment in may 1867, I was appointed by him in Jany or Feby 1867 I dont recollect which with full powers as any other agt and held me responsible to the military laws for all my acts, which you will find by consulting my papers now in the hands of (I suppose) Revs Goldthwait & Semple)

During the time I acted as agt I never resigned my office as Justice, but whatever duties that were attached to the office they did not conflict with the business of the Bureau for the reason there was nothing doing in that office as all the civil laws were at a stand still, and during the time I was acting as agt.
